Scancam Industries is the brainchild of two local Perth businessmen. We sat down and spoke to Eoin Byrne, one of the founders, to learn more about this revolutionary piece of technology to understand what it does and how it works.

1. How did you come up with this fabulous business idea?

A few years ago I was working as a security supervisor for a crowd control business in Perth and I helped to integrate/roll out ID scanners into licensed venues Perth. Patrons at these venues would have to have their ID scanned to gain entry and if they were not well behaved they could be banned from entering other licensed venues on the same network across Perth. Essentially a quick history check of a patron’s behaviour at venues. After finishing work at 3am and scanning hundreds of ID’s, thinking there has to be a better way of making money I went to a petrol station to get some fuel on the way home and as I entered the site I observed the attendant frantically scribbling down something on paper, I asked the attendant “Every time I come in here you’re writing something down what is it?” he said “your license plate” “ really you write every plate down by hand, Why?” I asked he told me in case I drove off without paying for fuel….. That’s when I thought if only BP could do a quick history check of their customers too, now that’s an opportunity.

2. You sound super smart, what qualifications do you have?

I don’t have any official qualifications or degrees, but if you count the school of hard work I have a masters. I first cut my teeth in business when I was 18, I saw an interesting concept on Oprah, “Dippin Dots ice cream” cryogenic ice cream, and I thought it was a great product and so I scraped together some savings and borrowed some money from my Father and bought a second hand run down ice cream trailer and started selling ice-creams with a mate at beaches, schools and fairs around Perth, it wasn’t long before the fleet of ice-cream trucks grew, and we ended up selling the most amount of Dippin Dots Ice-cream in Australia ($500k in one year).

3. When you’re at a BBQ and people ask you, what do you do? How do you respond?

We work with fuel retailers to reduce losses from fuel theft.

4. What type of person forgets to pay for petrol? What do they look like?

We have thousands of incidents of drive off offenders in our database, it would surprise you! From working class people to Mercedes driving mothers.

5. How many people per day forget to pay for petrol and what does that cost the retailers?

$120 million last year nationally.

6. You are an award-winning business – what awards have you won and how does it feel to win those?

We won WA innovator of the year and a national iAward for research and development, it felt great to be recognised by our peers and industry leaders.

7. Best piece of advice you ever received?

Innovation is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.

8. Is technology a threat, hindrance or benefit to businesses today?

Technology is all 3 if your business is not prepared.

9. What characteristics do you believe it takes to build a business like yours?

Grit and determination

10.What do you do to relax?

Getting away with my wife Melissa when we can and socialising with family and friends.

11. In three words, how would you describe Profusion Planning?

Friendly, professional and trustworthy.

Well, I think if you’ve got an idea, grab it and as Eoin says, it takes “grit and determination” to build an award-winning, innovative business – congratulations Scamcam!
